Asp di Caltanissetta Expands Medical Staff to Address Shortages

The Asp di Caltanissetta, a healthcare authority in Sicily, has announced new hiring measures to strengthen medical and nursing staff across its hospitals, according to a statement from the organization. The moves aim to alleviate staffing shortages and improve emergency and specialized care, as reported by local media.

Permanent and Temporary Appointments for Key Roles

The Asp di Caltanissetta has approved permanent hiring for Dr. Giulia Pernaci as a psychiatrist, following her completion of specialization. Pernaci, who ranked second in the specialist trainee list, will join the organization’s psychiatric department. Three temporary contracts were also granted for anesthesiology and intensive care roles, according to the statement. These include Dr. Veronica Gaglio, Dr. Gioacchina Martina Campione, and Dr. Ludovica D’Arpa, all from the University of Palermo.

Emergency Staffing Solutions

To address urgent needs, two temporary substitute roles for nursing staff were created. Dr. Letizia Rumeo and Dr. Carla Rumeo will support the Sant’Elia and Vittorio Emanuele hospitals, respectively. Additionally, three retired doctors were contracted for emergency care through 2026. These include Dr. Salem Abu Moamar, Dr. Rocco Trigona, and Dr. Valeria Ventimiglia, assigned to hospitals in Mazzarino, Gela, and Mussomeli.

Director’s Statement on Workforce Strategy

Director General Salvatore Ficarra emphasized the organization’s collaboration with universities and legal frameworks to address staffing gaps. “We are adding new forces in emergency care and specialized services to reduce the workload on departments,” he said in a statement. The measures are part of broader efforts to stabilize healthcare delivery in the region.

Context of Sicilian Healthcare Challenges

Sicily has faced persistent challenges in healthcare staffing, with reports of overburdened hospitals and delayed treatments. The Asp di Caltanissetta’s actions align with national initiatives to recruit medical professionals, though experts note that long-term solutions require systemic investment. A 2023 report by the Italian National Institute of Health highlighted that southern regions, including Sicily, have 15% fewer doctors per capita than northern Italy.
