Cameron Green Breaks IPL Record with $4.2 Million Deal
Cameron Green became the highest-priced overseas player in IPL history, purchased by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for INR 25.20 crore (AU$4.2 million).
At Tuesday’s player auction for the 2026 season, the Australia all-rounder was the focus of a competitive bidding war between KKR and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), ultimately won by the three-time champions.
Green is now the third most expensive IPL player trailing only India internationals Rishabh Pant (AU$4.46m) and Shreyas Iyer (AU$4.42m).
Due to a new IPL regulation, Green’s earnings are capped at just under AU$3 million. KKR will pay the remaining amount to the BCCI to support player welfare initiatives.
Green learned of his notable signing while preparing for the third Test against England, scheduled to begin on Wednesday.
Steven Smith was among a group of Australians who went unsold, and he did not receive any bids from the teams.
While Green’s deal was finalized early in the auction, Josh Inglis had to wait until nearly 2am Adelaide time to learn his fate. Smith’s wait proved even longer.
