A four-week dietary intervention can alter biological age markers in older adults, according to data analyzed by researchers at the University of Sydney. The findings suggest that nutritional changes later in life may rapidly improve physiological biomarkers associated with aging, even when implemented in individuals aged 65 to 75.

Biological age measures physiological function through specific biomarker profiles rather than counting the years since birth. While chronological age advances uniformly, biological age fluctuates based on genetics, environmental exposures, and dietary patterns. Researchers analyzed data from the Nutrition for Healthy Living study, a randomized clinical trial investigating how macronutrients and protein sources impact older adults, to see if diet could shift these metrics.

How the Diet Study Tested Biological Age

The clinical trial enrolled participants aged 65 to 75 with body mass indexes between 20 and 35. Researchers supplied all meals during the four-week intervention, randomly assigning participants to one of four distinct diets. Each meal plan provided 14 percent of its energy from protein, divided across omnivorous and semi-vegetarian frameworks.

In the omnivorous diets, protein was split evenly between animal and plant sources. In the semi-vegetarian diets, 70 percent of protein came from plants. Participants within both protein categories also received either high-fat, low-carbohydrate or low-fat, high-carbohydrate foods, creating four specific regimens: omnivorous high-fat, omnivorous high-carbohydrate, semi-vegetarian high-fat, and semi-vegetarian high-carbohydrate.

To measure the impact on biological age, the University of Sydney team utilized the Klemera-Doubal Method. This approach incorporated 20 distinct biomarkers, including blood pressure, C-reactive protein, and blood levels of insulin and cholesterol.

Biomarker Improvements Across Diet Categories

The omnivorous high-fat diet closely mirrored the typical baseline diets that participants reported eating before the trial began. Consequently, that group experienced the least effect on their biological ages, showing no significant changes in the relevant biomarkers.

However, the other three diet categories demonstrated notable shifts. Participants eating the omnivorous high-carbohydrate diet showed a statistically significant reduction in biological age markers. The semi-vegetarian high-fat and semi-vegetarian high-carbohydrate groups also exhibited reductions, though those changes did not always reach statistical significance.

“It’s too soon to say definitively that specific changes to diet will extend your life,” notes first author Caitlin Andrews, a nutrition scientist at the University of Sydney. “But this research offers an early indication of the potential benefits of dietary changes later in life.”

Future Research and Long-Term Implications

While the four-week intervention successfully altered key biomarkers, researchers emphasize that further investigation is required to determine whether these physiological improvements translate into durable protection against chronic disease.

“Longer-term dietary changes are needed to assess whether dietary changes alter the risk of age-related diseases,” states Alistair Senior, a nutritional ecologist at the University of Sydney.

Scientists plan to examine whether these biomarker reductions persist over extended periods and if the results replicate in other demographic groups. For now, the data indicates that modifying macronutrient distribution and protein sources can influence biological aging markers even in older populations.
