TB-500 is a synthetic version of thymosin beta-4, a protein naturally produced in the human body. Proponents of TB-500 suggest that by upregulating actin, the peptide may promote tissue repair and stimulate angiogenesis, which is the formation of new blood vessels.
However, findings from research on thymosin beta-4 in animal models do not translate directly to human medical treatments. There is currently no rigorous clinical evidence demonstrating that TB-500 effectively repairs muscle tissue or enhances athletic performance in humans.

The very mechanism that makes thymosin beta-4 attractive for wound healing also presents significant safety concerns. Because it promotes angiogenesis, there is a theoretical risk that it could facilitate tumor growth.
