Red Sunday Blood Donation Campaign Gains Momentum in Vietnam
The annual “Red Sunday” blood donation campaign continues to mobilize significant participation across Vietnam, addressing critical blood shortages, particularly following the Lunar New Year. Recent efforts in Can Tho demonstrate the ongoing success of this nationwide initiative.
18th Red Sunday in Can Tho Draws Nearly 1,000 Donors
On March 22, 2026, approximately 1,000 people participated in the 18th “Red Sunday” program held in Can Tho City. The event, organized by the Can Tho City Youth Union in coordination with Tien Phong Newspaper and the Southwestern Mobile Police Regiment, focused on the message of saving lives through blood donation. Vietnam.vn reported on the event.
The program saw participation from officers, soldiers, and youth union members. Lieutenant Colonel Vo Minh Phong, Commander of the Southwestern Mobile Police Regiment, expressed his appreciation for the strong turnout, highlighting the courage and compassion demonstrated by the donors and reinforcing the Vietnamese tradition of mutual support.
Medical staff from the Can Tho City Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital were on-site to conduct rapid hemoglobin and hepatitis B testing for all blood donors.
A Long-Standing Initiative Addressing Critical Needs
“Red Sunday” was initiated in 2009 by Tien Phong (Vanguard) newspaper in response to recurring blood shortages experienced after the Lunar New Year. VOVWorld reports that the campaign is now a collaborative effort involving the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, the National Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation, and the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union.
Over the past 18 years, the campaign has attracted hundreds of thousands of participants and collected hundreds of thousands of units of blood, playing a vital role in ensuring adequate blood supplies for emergency and treatment purposes during periods of high demand.
National Expansion and Continued Support
The 18th “Red Sunday” campaign is being implemented across provinces and cities nationwide. The initiative benefits from support from organizations like CP Vietnam Livestock Corporation, which donated 15,000 eggs to donors during the Can Tho event.
