Wearable sensors-assisted home-based cardiac rehabilitation significantly improves cardiorespiratory fitness in cardiovascular disease patients when compared to center-based programs, according to a systematic review and meta-analysis published in scientific literature. Researchers evaluated 14 randomized controlled trials published up to January 2022 across major databases including PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library to assess how remote health technology impacts patient recovery outcomes.

Cardiorespiratory Fitness Outcomes in Home-Based Rehabilitation

Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation remains a core recommendation for improving the health profile of patients with cardiovascular disease, yet participation rates stay low. To address this gap, researchers analyzed data comparing wearable-assisted home-based cardiac rehabilitation against traditional center-based cardiac rehabilitation and usual care models. According to the meta-analysis results, home programs utilizing wearable sensors yielded a statistically significant improvement in cardiorespiratory fitness when compared directly to center-based alternatives, registering a Hedges’ g of 0.22 with a 95% confidence interval ranging from 0.06 to 0.39 and a p-value of 0.01.

When researchers compared home-based cardiac rehabilitation using wearables against usual care alone, the effect on cardiorespiratory fitness showed a nonsignificant trend, recording a Hedges’ g of 0.87 with a confidence interval spanning from -0.87 to 1.85 and a p-value of 0.08. The analysis also synthesized narrative data regarding secondary endpoints, including physical activity levels, quality of life metrics, depression scores, cardiovascular risk factor modifications, laboratory parameters, and patient adherence rates. Across these secondary measures, the study revealed no statistically significant differences between the remote technology interventions and standard comparison groups.

Clinical Implications of Wearable Technology in Cardiology

The integration of digital health tools into cardiology care models provides an alternative pathway for patient recovery.

The findings indicate that wearable-assisted home models perform comparably or favorably regarding cardiorespiratory fitness gains while offering a viable adjunct or alternative to facility-based structures.
