Canada Extends Ukraine Military Support with New Aid Package and Operation UNIFIER Renewal

Ottawa, February 24, 2026 – Canada has reaffirmed its commitment to Ukraine’s defense and long-term security with a new military aid package and the extension of Operation UNIFIER, its military training mission, through 2029. The announcement, made on the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion, includes over 400 armored vehicles and $2 billion in military assistance for the 2026–2027 fiscal year.

Continued Military Training Through Operation UNIFIER

Minister of National Defence David J. McGuinty announced the extension of Operation UNIFIER, a Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) mission focused on bolstering the capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine through critical military training. The renewed mandate will allow for an increase in CAF personnel assigned to the mission, providing greater flexibility to adapt to the evolving needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Launched in 2015 in response to the 2014 Russian annexation of Crimea, Operation UNIFIER initially involved training within Ukraine itself, but relocated to Poland and other allied territories following the 2022 invasion .

Armored Vehicle Donation

The military aid package includes the donation of over 400 armored vehicles, comprising 66 Light Armoured Vehicle 6 (LAV 6) platforms produced by General Dynamics and 383 Senator armored vehicles manufactured by Canadian company Roshel. Canada was among the first nations to provide armored vehicles to Ukraine after the full-scale invasion began in 2022. The Roshel Senator has become a widely used Western-supplied armored vehicle in Ukrainian service, with over 2,000 delivered since the start of the invasion .

Supporting Ukraine’s Energy Sector and Economic Pressure on Russia

In addition to military aid, Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand announced an additional $20 million contribution to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, aimed at repairing and restoring critical energy infrastructure damaged by Russian strikes. Canada is likewise introducing new economic measures targeting Russia, including sanctions against 21 individuals and 53 entities, restrictions on 100 vessels associated with Russia’s shadow fleet, and a lowered price cap on Russian crude oil to $44.10 per barrel. These sanctions aim to increase economic pressure on Russia by targeting financial enablers, cryptocurrency infrastructure, and sectors linked to its military-industrial base .

Senator Armored Vehicle Capabilities

The Senator armored vehicle, produced by Roshel, is designed for troop transport, casualty evacuation, reconnaissance, and patrol missions. Built on a commercial truck chassis with ballistic protection, it offers resistance against small-arms fire and explosive threats even as maintaining mobility on various terrains. Its relatively simple maintenance and rapid production timeline have allowed for quick delivery of large numbers to Ukraine .

LAV 6 Integration

The LAV 6 vehicles represent a heavier category of armored platform, offering increased protection, firepower integration options, and battlefield mobility suited for mechanized operations.

The Canadian government emphasizes that these measures are intended to strengthen Ukraine’s negotiating position and provide agile, focused military assistance that responds directly to operational requirements on the battlefield.
