Canary Islands Launches “Lairaga Tropical” Project to Boost Local Fruit Production
The Canary islands goverment is investing in a new agricultural initiative, “Lairaga Tropical,” aimed at increasing the production of mango, papaya, and avocado. Announced on January 26th at the Agricultural Cooperative of the North of Gran Canaria in Arucas, the project will see 100 hectares of land dedicated to thes tropical fruits.
The initiative, spearheaded by Vice President of the Government of the Canary Islands and Minister of Economy, Industry, Commerce and the Self-Employed, Manuel Domínguez, and Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty, Narvay Quintero, will incorporate a precision agriculture system to optimize yields and resource use. Improvements to packaging facilities are also planned.
“Lairaga Tropical” is a key component of the canary Islands Food sovereignty Strategy, designed to enhance local food security and reduce reliance on imports. The project is managed by Victor García, secretary, and Alicia González, manager, of the Northern Agricultural Cooperative of gran Canaria. It represents a significant investment in the future of Canarian agriculture and aims to strengthen the region’s position as a producer of high-quality tropical fruits.
