Canva has launched Canva Code 2.0, an update to its AI-powered design platform that enables users to generate interactive websites and applications through natural language prompts. Available to all users across every pricing tier, the tool allows for drag-and-drop editing of generated code, aiming to bridge the gap between functional AI prototypes and polished, brand-aligned visual design.
Refining the Vibe Coding Experience
The “vibe coding” category, which involves using AI to build software without traditional manual programming, has grown into a multi-billion dollar market. While platforms like Replit, Bolt.new, and Lovable focus primarily on generating functional code, Canva is positioning its tool as a “finishing layer.” According to the company, most AI-generated code results in generic outputs that require professional design intervention.
Canva Code 2.0 addresses this by allowing users to treat coded elements like standard design assets. Users can modify text, swap images from Canva’s library of over 120 million assets, and adjust fonts or colors using a familiar interface. Danny Wu, Canva’s Head of AI Products, noted that the platform is specifically designed for non-technical users who require interactive communication tools, such as calculators or data visualizers within presentations, rather than complex, backend-heavy applications.

Performance Gains and Platform Integration
Canva reports that the 2.0 update improves code generation speeds by 75% and reduces the time from prompt to publication by 30%. By integrating the tool directly into the broader Canva ecosystem, the company allows users to embed interactive projects into whiteboards, slide decks, or standalone pages.
A standout feature of this release is the ability to import raw HTML files from other AI coding tools. This interoperability allows users to generate code elsewhere and bring it into Canva for final visual styling. The company confirmed that it uses a mix of proprietary and third-party AI models, including technology from OpenAI and Anthropic, to power these capabilities.
Operational Boundaries and Data Governance
While the update expands the platform’s utility, Canva remains transparent about its limitations. The tool is optimized for front-end experiences and moderate-scale interactivity. It is not intended for building complex backends or managing high-traffic web applications.

Market Context and Future Growth
The launch arrives as the AI app-building market continues to expand. Research from Luminix AI estimated the sector reached $4.7 billion in 2026, with projections suggesting it could grow to $12.3 billion by 2027. Despite the rise of specialized coding platforms, Canva is leveraging its existing base of more than 265 million monthly users.
Since the initial release of Canva Code one year ago, users have published over six million websites. While the company continues to refine its metrics regarding long-term site retention and traffic, the current focus remains on lowering the barrier to entry for professional-grade, interactive visual communication. By prioritizing “editability” over raw coding complexity, Canva is betting that the most valuable AI tools are those that allow users to maintain their unique brand identity without needing to write a single line of code.
