Cole Hutson Poised for NHL Debut with Washington Capitals

ARLINGTON, Virginia – Cole Hutson, 19, is on the verge of realizing his NHL dream, with all signs pointing to his debut with the Washington Capitals against the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at Capital One Arena (7:30 p.m. ET; MNMT, SN, TVAS). The young defenseman recently signed a three-year, entry-level contract with Washington on Sunday after completing his sophomore season at Boston University.

From Boston University to the NHL

Hutson admitted to feeling overwhelmed at the prospect of his first NHL game. “I’ll probably be in shock the whole game, I don’t grasp,” Hutson said after his first practice with the Capitals on Tuesday. “Just getting ready to play, getting to the rink and experiencing it for the first time… it’s going to be really crazy. He likewise consulted with his older brothers, Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson and Edmonton Oilers prospect Quinn Hutson. “I spent three hours on the phone with Lane yesterday, just talking about how I should play, what to do and what not to do,” Cole Hutson said.

Hutson also had the opportunity to meet Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin, the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer, and was impressed by his skill. “It was incredible,” he said. “It’s crazy to watch him take a shot on the ice, and he took one on the power play that was crazy. He’s a true legend. I’m still a little in shock.”

During practice, Hutson demonstrated his offensive capabilities with a skillful pass to Ivan Miroshnichenko for a goal during a two-on-two drill, earning praise from teammates like Pierre-Luc Dubois and Matt Roy.
