Homes Evacuated After Car Explosion Outside Northern Ireland Police Station
On the evening of Saturday, April 25, 2025, a car exploded outside Dunmurry police station on the outskirts of Belfast, prompting an immediate evacuation of nearby homes and prompting authorities to treat the incident as an attempted murder. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed that a delivery driver’s vehicle was hijacked in the Twinbrook area of west Belfast, fitted with a gas cylinder device, and forced to the police station before detonating shortly after 22:50 BST.
Several residents, including two babies, were being escorted to safety by officers when the explosion occurred. Thanks to the swift response of emergency personnel, no injuries were reported. Deputy Chief Constable Bobby Singleton emphasized that the device was clearly intended to cause harm, stating, “Our thoughts today are with all those affected by this cowardly attack, the delivery driver for whom this will have been an extremely traumatic experience.”
Investigation Launched by Terrorism Unit
The PSNI Terrorism Investigation Unit has taken over the investigation, with Singleton appealing for anyone with information to come forward. Forensic officers were seen examining the burnt-out vehicle the following morning in a side street beside the station. The incident has been widely condemned by political leaders across the spectrum.
First Minister Michelle O’Neill denounced the attack, saying those responsible “have no vision, no support, and have nothing to offer our society,” while adding that “our communities deserve peace.” Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly echoed this sentiment, describing the act as “appalling” and reaffirming that such violence has no place in a society committed to the Great Friday Agreement.
Community Impact and Response
The explosion shook the residential area of Dunmurry, with homes evacuated and a police cordon established. Residents expressed shock and concern, particularly given the proximity of families and young children to the blast site. Sinn Féin representative Patricia O’Lynn noted the disproportionate risk posed to civilians in what she described as a reckless act endangering lives beyond the intended target.
Chief Constable Jon Boutcher called the attack an assault not just on police but on the broader community, stating, “These mindless idiots wantonly risked the lives of local residents including very young children,” and urged the public to reject such violence as incompatible with the peace many have worked to build.
