Arizona Cardinals rookie quarterback Carson Beck missed Thursday night’s preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders due to a ribs injury sustained during the previous week, according to NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport. The injury is not considered serious, but the team held him out as a precaution to allow for recovery after he practiced through pain throughout the week.
The absence prevented a professional rematch of the NCAA National Championship game. In that collegiate matchup, Fernando Mendoza led the Indiana Hoosiers to a 27-21 victory over Carson Beck and the Miami Hurricanes. Mendoza was selected first overall in the recent NFL draft by the Raiders, while Beck was selected in the third round.
Quarterback Rotation and Preseason Debut Performance
With Beck sidelined, the Cardinals assigned Jacoby Brissett the starting role for Thursday’s contest. The Raiders countered by designating Kirk Cousins to start under center.
Beck made his initial professional appearance during the Hall of Fame Game, the traditional opening matchup of the NFL preseason, where the Cardinals fell 33-30 to the Carolina Panthers. During that outing, Beck completed 15 of 19 passes for 188 yards and one touchdown.
