Carolina Mall Cinema in Concord Closes Permanently After Decades

From Modest Beginnings to 12 Screens

The cinema’s history in Cabarrus County dates back to 1976. According to reporting from WBTV, the venue began as a small cinema before expanding over the decades to eventually house 12 screens. While the theater operated under various banners throughout its lifespan—including Litchfield Theatres and United Artists—it was most recently managed by the Charlotte-based company Southeast Cinemas Entertainment.

A Final Goodbye to Regulars

While the theater did not cite a specific reason for the shutdown in its public statement, the venue expressed gratitude toward its customer base, noting, “We have many regulars that we see each week and will miss each and every one of you.”

Pandemic Innovation in the Parking Lot

The theater gained local attention during the COVID-19 pandemic when indoor operations were restricted. To maintain service, the Carolina Mall Cinema transitioned to a drive-in model within its parking lot. As reported by The Charlotte Observer in 2020, the theater utilized a 45-foot-wide by 25-foot-high outdoor screen to accommodate approximately 100 cars.

General manager Bryan Smith noted at the time that the drive-in setup was intended to last as long as there was demand, with the theater providing concession delivery directly to vehicles.

Portfolio Shifts for Southeast Cinemas

The Carolina Mall location was part of a larger portfolio managed by Southeast Cinemas Entertainment. According to the company’s website, the firm continues to oversee eight other theater locations across the Carolinas, Virginia, and Tennessee. Representatives for Southeast Cinemas Entertainment did not respond to inquiries from CharlotteFive regarding the specific circumstances surrounding the closure of the Concord site.
