Dementia Awareness and Support in South Tipperary
A recent Dementia Awareness Evening in Carrick-on-Suir highlighted the vital services and supports available to individuals living with dementia and their families in South Tipperary. The event, organized by the Carrick-on-Suir & District Lions Club in association with the Alzheimer Society of Ireland, aimed to increase awareness, reduce stigma, and connect people with local resources.
Local Dementia Advisers Provide Crucial Support
Gemma O’Donnell and Áine Kelly serve as Dementia Advisers for South Tipperary through the Alzheimer Society of Ireland. They offer a free and confidential service, providing individualized information and guidance to those navigating a dementia diagnosis. Their support includes connecting individuals and families with dementia-specific services, local groups, and initiatives to foster dementia-friendly communities. Services Available in South Tipperary
The Living Well with Dementia Service, represented by Nurse Manager Shona O’Brien, also participated in the awareness evening. A range of services are available locally, including day care, activity groups, support groups, and dementia/memory cafés. These programs provide stimulating and caring environments for individuals with dementia and their caregivers. South Tipperary Development ClG and Muintir na Tíre were also present to offer information, and support.
Carrick-on-Suir Memory Café
The Carrick-on-Suir Memory Café offers a relaxed social setting for individuals with dementia and their loved ones. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM at the Carrick Library, featuring refreshments, music, and talks.
