Supernatural Mystery Miniseries Yaga Premieres on Crave

Carrie-Anne Moss stars in Yaga, a new supernatural mystery miniseries created by Kat Sandler that premieres with two half-hour episodes on Crave. The series is adapted from a play written by Sandler that featured three actors playing 14 characters, as reported by The Globe and Mail. In the television adaptation, the story expands into a West Coast setting combining eerie wilderness imagery with a modern supernatural investigation.

Dual Roles and Cast Dynamics in Whittock

Noah Reid stars as Rapp, a womanizing private investigator who travels to the fictional Vancouver Island town of Whittock to locate a missing billionaire’s son named Henry Park. Reid plays against his previous television persona to portray a private investigator paired with a local police officer named Carson, played by Clark Backo. Hudson Williams plays two supporting roles in the series: the missing Henry Park and his lower-class roommate, Logan Casey. The narrative follows the two detectives as they cross paths with Katherine, an osteology professor played by Carrie-Anne Moss who studies bones and the folklore of the bone-eating witch Baba Yaga. The original play, which Sandler wrote, featured three actors playing 14 characters and premiered in 2019.

Slavic Folklore and Pop Covers Shape the Series

Each episode of the miniseries opens with voice-over narration performed in a Ukrainian accent by the mythical monster of Slavic folklore, offering monologues that reframe historical perceptions of powerful women deemed witches. The soundtrack features a mix of Croatian, Czech, Polish, and Russian versions of well-known Western pop songs. The production elides contemporary geopolitical realities while drawing on traditional Slavic legends for its central mystery. The mishmash of Slavic pop covers struck a sour note in the context of Ukraine’s current geopolitical situation, according to The Globe and Mail.

Series Premieres on Crave and AMC+

While the series debuts on Crave in Canada, it simultaneously premieres on AMC+ in the United States. On AMC+, the miniseries joins a lineup of supernatural programming associated with universes from Anne Rice and The Walking Dead. The adaptation brings Sandler’s original theatrical work to the screen by maintaining a prince-and-pauper dynamic through Williams’s dual performances while blending police procedural elements with folkloric horror. Rapp serves as the Mulder to Carson’s Scully in this tale, with Rapp experiencing nightmarish visions and Carson skeptical of witchcraft, according to The Globe and Mail. The show arrives as public anger over systemic failures in justice for women and girls intensifies, reflecting broader cultural conversations.
