New Road Tolls for Heavy Goods Vehicles in Grand Est Region to Begin in 2027
Starting in the summer of 2027, operators of heavy goods vehicles (hgvs) weighing over 3.5 tonnes will face a new per-kilometer toll when traveling on designated roads within the Grand Est region of France. The toll, estimated at approximately 15 cents per kilometer, will apply to roughly 500 kilometers of roadway, including sections of the A31, A30, RN4, and RN52. This represents a small fraction of the regionS total 85,000-kilometer road network.
Regional carriers have voiced strong opposition to the new tolls, expressing concerns that they will disproportionately impact their businesses. They argue that the added cost will create a competitive disadvantage and possibly disrupt supply chains. The National Road Transport Federation (FNTR) grand Est is advocating for mechanisms that allow carriers to pass these additional expenses onto their customers.
The implementation of this toll system aims to generate revenue for road maintainance and improvements within the Grand Est region. Authorities have indicated that the funds collected will be reinvested into enhancing the regional road infrastructure, addressing wear and tear, and improving overall transportation efficiency.Further details regarding the toll collection process, exemptions, and potential impacts on specific industries are expected to be released in the coming months.
The FNTR Grand est is actively working with regional authorities to explore solutions that mitigate the financial burden on carriers and ensure a smooth transition to the new tolling system. Discussions are ongoing regarding the feasibility of standardized billing practices and potential goverment support measures to offset the increased costs.
