Castletownbere secured their Premier Intermediate status in dramatic fashion on Saturday in Ballinacarriga, defeating Glanmire 0-17 to 3-6 thanks to Declan Dunne’s decisive scores in added time. The result sends Glanmire back down to a lower tier after two seasons.
Castletownbere had been comfortably clear for much of the first half, building an eight-point lead before Glanmire mounted a second-half resurgence. Trailing by eight points with 28 minutes elapsed, Glanmire reduced the deficit to six at the break at 0-10 to 0-4 following fisted scores from Harry Jones. On the restart, Daragh Murray notched a point before substitute Cathal McCarthy hit the first of Glanmire’s three second-half goals, slotting the ball in at the bottom corner following a flowing move involving Daniel Hogan and Tiernan Hourihan.
Glanmire’s Second-Half Surge
Seven minutes later, McCarthy surged away on the break and teed up Murray to finish, putting Glanmire briefly ahead at 2-5 to 0-10. Gary Murphy grabbed a leveller before Declan Dunne fired Castletownbere back in front after 50 minutes. Murray levelled once more for Glanmire, and with five minutes remaining, Murphy put the Beara outfit back in front.
In the 57th minute, Brian Galvin struck from range, and after a failed Castletownbere clearance, Bill O’Mahony palmed the ball to the net to send Glanmire two ahead. However, in the 59th minute, Fintan Fenner worked a two-point chance and levelled the score once more.
Late Heroics Secure Survival
With the sides level, Castletownbere held out against two waves of Glanmire attacks before Dunne took control. Dunne slotted over the first score after 63 minutes following good work from Tomás Murphy, and then secured the victory with the final kick of the game in the 65th minute. Glanmire were left to rue a first half where they wasted ample chances and endured a 22-minute spell without a score.
