House Explosion and Gas Leak Evacuate Dozens in Fairfax County, Virginia

Centreville, VA – A house explosion in Centreville, Virginia, on Sunday night prompted the evacuation of nearly 50 homes and left two people injured, according to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department officials. A gas leak was subsequently confirmed in the area, extending the response and evacuation efforts into Monday.

What Happened?

The incident began around 9:48 p.m. On Sunday, February 15, 2026, in the 14300 block of Quail Pond Court. Multiple 911 calls reported a loud explosion and flames engulfing a residence. Firefighters arrived to find the home fully engulfed and “all but destroyed,” WJLA reported.

Injuries and Evacuations

Two people were injured in the explosion. One man self-evacuated from a second-story window and sustained a leg injury. The nature of the second person’s injuries remains unknown. Approximately 40 to 50 homes were evacuated as a precaution, with residents being directed to warming centers or staying with family and friends. InsideNoVa and Fox 5 DC confirmed the evacuation numbers.

Gas Leak and Ongoing Investigation

Firefighters discovered a natural gas leak in the area even as battling the fire. Washington Gas officials are on the scene supporting the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department and are using heavy equipment to pinpoint the source of the leak. As of noon on Monday, February 16, 2026, crews were still working to resolve the gas leak and assess the surrounding homes. Authorities have not yet determined if the gas leak caused the explosion or if the two events are related.

Multiple Pipelines in the Area

Firefighters noted the presence of three natural gas pipelines in the vicinity, owned by Williams Pipeline Corporation and Washington Gas. NBC Washington reported that first responders went door-to-door around 11 a.m. To check natural gas levels in each home.

Washington Gas Statement

Washington Gas issued a statement expressing gratitude to the emergency crews and pledging continued cooperation with all relevant agencies.

Ongoing Response

Crews anticipate remaining in the area for an extended period as they continue to investigate the cause of the explosion and repair the gas leak. Residents are advised to avoid the area.
