Horner syndrome is a common postoperative complication if the sympathetic nerves are stretched or severed during the dissection of the tumor. The syndrome is defined by a triad of symptoms:

  • Ptosis: Drooping of the upper eyelid.
  • Miosis: Constriction of the pupil.
  • Anhidrosis: Decreased sweating on the affected side of the face.

Patients with NF1 require ongoing surveillance by a multidisciplinary team, including neurologists and geneticists, to monitor for the development of other tumor types or complications associated with their genetic condition.

While Horner syndrome can be a distressing postoperative outcome, it is often considered a manageable trade-off for the removal of a mass that poses a risk of further growth and compression of vital neck structures. Early identification of the mass through routine NF1 screening remains the most effective way to manage these rare clinical presentations.
