CFL Shuts Door on Brendan Sorsby
The Canadian Football League has officially barred Brendan Sorsby from signing with any team or appearing on negotiation lists. The league’s Friday statement confirmed it will not register a contract for the 22-year-old, citing concerns over the integrity of the game. By effectively freezing him out of the professional circuit in Canada, the CFL has closed the door on his immediate future.

The league’s firm stance marks the latest fallout from Sorsby’s admission of placing thousands of bets totaling nearly $90,000 during his collegiate career.
A Pattern of Collegiate Betting
While records indicate Sorsby did not wager on games in which he personally participated, he admitted to placing at least 40 bets on Indiana football games during his 2022 freshman season. The league categorized the allegations involving the player as “serious and concerning.”
The NCAA declared Sorsby permanently ineligible following his transfer from Cincinnati to Texas Tech earlier this year.
Professional Dead Ends
Sorsby’s attempt to transition into the professional ranks has been met with systemic resistance. After seeking entry into the NFL’s supplemental draft, he was informed by the league that no such draft would be held this year. A letter obtained by The Associated Press advised the quarterback to focus on preparing for the standard 2027 draft process instead.
Sorsby had scheduled a session of tests for NFL teams for July 10.
Legal Maneuvering and Fallout
The controversy gained national attention after Sorsby entered a residential treatment program for a gambling addiction. Following that treatment, he filed a lawsuit against the NCAA, which resulted in a court-ordered reinstatement. The legal maneuver sparked significant friction at Texas Tech, prompting the player to look toward professional football instead.
With the NFL having not conducted a supplemental draft since 2023 and the CFL doubling down on its integrity policies, Sorsby currently finds himself without a viable path to professional football.
