Financial Muscle Dominates Champions League Simulations
A new analysis simulating the UEFA Champions League knockout phase reveals that financial strength, rather than on-pitch performance, is the dominant factor in predicting success. Manchester City emerge as the favorites, winning the tournament in 27.7% of all simulations, highlighting the growing financial divergence in European football.
Methodology: Simulating Success Through Finances
The analysis, conducted by Off The Pitch, utilizes a model based on January squad value, estimated current-season wage bills, net spend across the 2025-26 summer and winter windows, and spending efficiency. Unlike traditional predictions, this simulation deliberately excludes on-pitch performance, exposing the impact of financial resources on Champions League probabilities. The bracket was simulated 10,000 times based on the play-off fixtures.
Manchester City Lead the Pack
Manchester City’s financial profile – boasting the most valuable squad in Europe at €1.7 billion, the third-highest net spend this season, and the second-highest estimated wage bill – strongly positions them as favorites in the model. They win the tournament in 27.7% of all simulations.
PSG’s Path Complicated by Bracket Structure
Paris Saint-Germain, despite being the financially strongest club ranks second with a 23.3% win probability. This is due to a more challenging bracket configuration, requiring an additional match against AS Monaco and a potential tie against either FC Barcelona or Chelsea.
Premier League Dominance
The simulations indicate a strong Premier League presence, with a 61.5% probability of a Premier League club winning the Champions League. Five of the eight clubs finishing in the top eight of the league phase originated from the Premier League. Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa League win further solidifies the Premier League’s Champions League representation, resulting in six English teams participating in the 2025-26 UCL. ESPN
Other League Performance
- Ligue 1: Driven entirely by Paris Saint-Germain, accounting for 23.3% of tournament wins.
- La Liga: FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid contribute only marginally, representing 8.7% of wins.
- Bundesliga: Bayern Munich accounts for the majority of the 5.2% of wins, with Bayer Leverkusen winning only five times and Borussia Dortmund not winning at all.
- Serie A: The outlook is bleak, producing just 41 winners across 10,000 simulations, hampered by lower squad values and wage bills.
Comparing Financial and On-Pitch Simulations
A comparison with simulations conducted by Opta, which are based exclusively on on-pitch performance, reveals interesting discrepancies. Arsenal and Bayern Munich outperform their financial expectations in the Opta model, benefiting from strong domestic form. Conversely, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Real Madrid are rated more favorably by the financial model, highlighting the gap between financial strength and current sporting performance. UEFA
Opta’s rankings place Arsenal with a 29.8% chance of winning, significantly higher than the 10% in the financial simulation. Bayern Munich follows at 14.9%, also exceeding their financial expectation of around 5%. Manchester City ranks third at 10.5%, whereas Paris Saint-Germain is given just a 5.1% chance, a substantial decrease from the 18.2% in the financial model.
