A homeless veteran who shared his personal experiences of military service and housing struggles with the charity Shelter was subsequently asked to add lines defending the housing of migrants to his testimony. The veteran, who served in Eastern Europe and Ukraine before leaving the military in 2023 due to post-traumatic stress disorder and knee injuries, described the request as an attempt to turn his life story into political propaganda.
Charity Solicitation and the Request for Political Additions
Last December, the taxpayer-funded charity Shelter issued an appeal inviting Britons to share their experiences of homelessness. The veteran submitted a detailed account covering his time in the Army, emergency accommodation, and a legal dispute with his local council. Initially, Shelter praised the account, stating it made no reference to immigrants and was exactly the type of story they sought.
Weeks later, however, the veteran received a follow-up message from the charity. According to emails seen by the Mail on Sunday, a Shelter representative wrote that people often conflate veteran homelessness with migrants receiving homes, suggesting an addition to address the topic. The proposed text stated that blaming migrants is unacceptable and that only social home building will end homelessness.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the veteran criticized the move. He stated that he had approached Shelter to tell his own story after being encouraged to do so, and that introducing a political issue concerning migrants forced him to promote a specific message without his consent. He questioned how charities solicit and use the stories of vulnerable individuals, arguing that storytellers risk being used to lend emotional credibility to an organization’s pro-migration messaging.
Political Reaction and Charity Apology
Conservative MP Katie Lam, the party’s Shadow Housing Secretary, condemned the charity’s actions. She accused Shelter of using a vulnerable individual as a political pawn to advance an ideological left-wing campaign.
In response to the controversy, a Shelter spokesman confirmed that the charity has apologised to the veteran. The spokesman stated that their approach to working with the storyteller was not the right one in this instance and that the organization is taking learnings forward regarding authentic storytelling.
Government funding records show that Shelter received significant public support, including government grants totaling nearly £27 million between 2021 and 2025.
Council Interaction and Housing Support
The veteran’s housing difficulties also involved Chesterfield Borough Council, where he faced a dispute after becoming homeless through no fault of his own. During his interactions with the local authority, a senior housing officer asked whether he had killed anyone in places such as Iraq—a question the veteran described as deeply distressing.
Chesterfield Borough Council stated it could not comment on individual cases but confirmed that asking veterans about combat fatalities is not council policy. A council spokesman acknowledged why such a question could cause distress and noted that officers follow national legislation recognizing that military service can affect an individual’s housing situation, well-being, and ability to cope with civilian life.
