Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Go Viral Using Social Media to Build Community Trust

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in North Carolina is gaining viral attention on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram by using short-form videos to share public safety messages and connect directly with local residents, according to department officials.

Why Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Turned to Social Media

To bridge that gap, officers in Charlotte decided to adopt creative digital strategies already utilized by other public safety organizations, according to Officer John Hammond, the department’s community coordinator.

“Some of us had been watching the TikToks or Instagram videos other law enforcement agencies were posting to reach out to their communities, and we wanted to be a part of that as well,” Hammond said in an interview with NewsNation. Hammond noted that the initiative has been a collaborative team effort alongside the department’s Public Information Officer (PIO) team.

Humanizing the Badge and Building Trust

A primary goal of the department’s digital outreach is to dismantle intimidation factors that often prevent citizens from speaking with police officers. By injecting humor and personality into their content, officers aim to show that law enforcement personnel share common human experiences.

“We always want people to feel like they can approach us,” Hammond told NewsNation. “So, by putting these videos out, we’re letting them know we’re real people and giving them a piece of our personality and letting them see we can laugh and joke as well.”
