OpenAI has introduced Computer History, a new desktop feature for ChatGPT on Mac that records user activity across explicitly authorized applications and websites to provide personalized context for future interactions, according to an official announcement by the company on August 13, 2026.
How ChatGPT Computer History Operates on macOS
According to OpenAI, Computer History collects interaction data such as clicks, keyboard input, application switching, and other actions exposed by macOS through its accessibility system. Unlike earlier preview tests from Chronicle research, the feature does not capture screenshots or audio recordings. Instead, user actions are transformed periodically into textual summaries. Local files used during these sessions are isolated in an App Group and automatically deleted after 48 hours by Codex and ChatGPT systems.
The feature is designed to serve three main functions: helping users resume tasks where they left off, locating previously viewed documents, and automating repetitive routines. When the system detects a recurring pattern, it suggests creating a custom skill or automation.
Privacy Safeguards and Data Transmission
While OpenAI states that captured interactions are sent periodically via an ephemeral online Codex session, the company maintains that these event files are not retained after processing—unless required by law—and are excluded from model training. The feature remains disabled by default. Users can manually delete individual items from their history or turn off the integration entirely through the settings menu within the ChatGPT Mac desktop application.
Despite these safeguards, the feature raises questions about data collection practices, including the potential for exposure to hidden prompt injections embedded within third-party applications and web pages.
Availability Across Tiers and Regions
According to OpenAI’s deployment schedule, Computer History is available immediately to users subscribed to ChatGPT Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans. Free and Plus account tiers do not currently support the feature. Furthermore, availability is restricted outside the United States at launch; users located within the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland will receive access in the coming weeks.
