“She’s amazing,” Gray said of Tipesa. “I don’t think I’d be able to do it without her. “The toughest part is missing the everyday happenings in between,” Gray noted. “It’s a dynamic I don’t see talked about much. There’s some nature versus nurture. There’s this struggle and balance that I have to do.”

Gray’s experiences have driven her to advocate for better support for WNBA players who are also parents. As a player representative for the Aces, she played a key role in negotiating a historic collective bargaining agreement (CBA) that includes improved childcare provisions. The new contract nearly doubles the childcare stipend and ensures teams cover the cost of an extra hotel room for players bringing childcare on the road. Playrooms will be available at home games for children who prefer not to attend arenas.

“Those things are super essential because it’s like, you don’t want to choose between spending time with your kid, but also the financial burden that it could have,” Gray explained. “It’s kind of evened the playing field in that way.”

Gray credits motherhood with enhancing her leadership skills, both in basketball and life. Her role as a point guard, which requires strategic thinking and compartmentalizing responsibilities, has translated into her approach to parenting. “You have to make sure everybody is okay—and it’s constant,” she said. “I take that to motherhood, because when you go home, you make sure everybody’s on the same page.”

After a hard-fought victory, Lennox’s simple desire to play with trucks reminds Gray to prioritize joy and connection over competition. “IQ kind of goes out the window and allows that freedom in your mind to take over,” she said.
