Chicago Police Officer Killed, Another Critically Injured in Hospital Shooting

One Chicago police officer was killed and another remains in critical condition after a shooting at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital in the Ravenswood neighborhood on Saturday morning, officials confirmed.

The incident occurred around 11 a.m. At the hospital located at 5140 North California Avenue, where two officers had transported a robbery suspect for medical treatment. According to Chicago Police Department Superintendent Larry Snelling, the suspect had been “wanded upon arrival” and was escorted by law enforcement at all times in accordance with hospital safety protocols, but later gained access to a firearm and opened fire on the officers.

One officer was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the hospital. The second officer, a 57-year-old 21-year veteran of the department, is fighting for his life in critical condition. The slain officer was identified as a 38-year-old 10-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department from the 17th District, though his name has not been released pending family notification.

A weapon was recovered at the scene and the suspect was apprehended a short time later. Endeavor Health stated in a release that no staff or patients were physically harmed during the incident, and the hospital campus was placed on lockdown while law enforcement secured the scene.

The investigation remains ongoing, with officials urging the public to retain the officers’ families in their thoughts and prayers.
