Severe Storms and Winter Weather to Impact Chicago Area
Chicago residents should prepare for a dynamic weather pattern bringing thunderstorms, high winds, and a switch to snow overnight Sunday into Monday. A series of storms are expected to move through the region, followed by a wintry mix that could impact the morning commute.
Storm Timeline and Potential Impacts
According to ABC7 Accuweather Meteorologist Jaisol Martinez, the Chicago area can expect multiple rounds of storms. The first round is anticipated between 9 a.m. And noon on Sunday, with storms weakening as they move into the city. A second round is forecast to arrive between 4-9 p.m., bringing the primary concern of damaging wind gusts. Finally, a third round will move in around 1 a.m. Monday, transitioning to snow showers through the morning commute, potentially lasting until around 10 a.m.
Snowfall Potential and Weather Alerts
Snowfall accumulations of one to four inches are possible during Monday morning’s snow showers. Most of the Chicago area is under a Level 2 risk for severe weather, with northern and northwestern suburbs at a Level 1 risk.
Several weather alerts are in effect:
- Winter Weather Advisory: McHenry, Lake (IL), Northern Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, and LaSalle counties from 10 p.m. Sunday through noon Monday.
- High Wind Warning: Kankakee County and Northwest Indiana from 10 a.m. Until 9 p.m. For wind gusts up to 60 mph.
