Lead Childrenor Children of Lead, takes us to the 70s, where a young doctor comes across dozens of sick children with strange symptoms in a small community called Szopienice, in Silesia, Poland, and soon discovers that all of these cases are connected and have a clear cause.
The miniseries has only 6 chapters and stars Joanna Kuligthe actress who conquered the world with her performance in the film Cold War. Sleigh ride plays a young doctor named Jolanta Wadowska-Król, who tries to fight the system to help children, and to prevent more from suffering the consequences of what was happening in the community.
And what was happening? The largest smelting factory in the city was having lead emissions and it was making children sick. When the doctor discovers this, she also realizes that the factory is really important to the community and that many prefer that the truth not come to light.
The Polish miniseries has moments of drama and tension, it shows a woman who decides to fight to change things, while the government and many around her try to stop her to protect an industry that was causing a lot of damage.
Is Lead Children a true story?
Like the miniseries Chernobylde HBO, lead children is inspired by a true story (and a novel written by Michal Jedryka), where we can see the consequences of pollution due to toxic materials. In Chernobyl, what we see is what happened after the nuclear explosion and the effects of the radiation on people, while in Lead Children we see a community that is unknowingly affected by toxic waste from a factory that employs most of the people in the community.
This reality is what causes the conflict, since closing the factory would mean that hundreds of people would be left without jobs and without a livelihood (which is why there are those who prefer that the truth not be known), but keeping things the same would cause much more pain and illness in the children.
The story takes place during the 70s, in a time marked by communism, in a Polish community in which children have growth problems, neurological problems and various disabilities.
