Antonia Orellana: Chile’s Minister of Women and Gender Equality

Antonia Cósmica Orellana Guarello, born December 21, 1989, is a Chilean politician, journalist, and currently serves as the Minister of Women and Gender Equality. Her tenure is set to conclude on March 11, 2026, with Judith Marín slated to succeed her.

Early Life and Education

Orellana, also known as “Toti” and “Candy” to friends, was born in Macul, Chile, to Margarita Guarello, an academic, and Alfredo Orellana, a poet. She experienced the loss of her father at the age of five and was raised with her brother and three sisters in La Florida.

She pursued higher education at the University of Chile, earning both a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in Gender studies. 1

Career

Orellana has established herself as a recognized journalist and activist, contributing to various Chilean media outlets including Radio Cooperativa, La Tercera, and El Desconcierto. She has also worked as a correspondent for international news organizations such as BBC and Al Jazeera. 1

As a feminist activist, Orellana has been involved in movements like Ni una menos and the National Coordinator of the Feminist and Sexual Diversity Organization. 1 She previously participated in the Communist party of Chile and served as a counselor for the Municipality of San Bernardo. Minister of Women and Gender Equality

Appointed by President Gabriel Boric on March 11, 2022, Orellana has been a key advisor to the President. 1 As of January 22, 2026, she has commented on the upcoming transition, stating that her successor, Judith Marín, will be responsible for implementing the comprehensive law against violence. 2
