Chilesaurus is a type of dinosaur that originates from the Patagonia region. Precisely in the Aysén area, Southern Chile. The fossils were first identified in the Toqui Formation. This is an area known to be rich in the remains of ancient life.

Scientists estimate that the ancient environment in this region was once a plain with quite abundant vegetation. So it becomes the most ideal place for living creatures, including dinosaurs.

What makes the discovery of Chilesaurus so special is the person who first discovered it. In 2004, a 7-year-old boy named Diego Suárez discovered the fossil. At that time, he went on a field trip with his parents who happened to work as geologists.

At first, they did not immediately recognize this finding as a complete species. The bone pieces that emerged had various shapes and appeared to come from different groups of dinosaurs. Because of this, researchers thought that these fossils were a combination of several species.

It was only after years of in-depth analysis that a number of scientists concluded that all the bones collected belonged to one such dinosaur. The scientific description of Chilesaurus was then officially published in 2015.

Unique Physical Characteristics

Morphologically, Chilesaurus was completely different from most other dinosaurs. Its body length reaches around 3 meters with an estimated weight of 150 – 200 kilograms. This size is classified as medium. This means it is not too big, but enough to make it an important resident in its ecosystem.

The skull and arms of Chilesaurus are reminiscent of the Theropoda, a group that is generally carnivorous. The forelimbs are relatively strong with curved claws. This is a feature they usually use to catch prey.

However, its pelvic structure actually resembles Ornithischia, a group of herbivorous dinosaurs that have bird-like pelvises. Another oddity can be seen on its hind legs. The foot structure of Chilesaurus is similar to that of Sauropodomorpha.

For those who don’t know, Sauropodomorpha is the group that was the ancestor of long-necked dinosaurs. Don’t forget the existence of a long tail which is said to function as a balancer and prevent the body from falling when running in various environmental conditions. This combination of characteristics then makes scientists call it a “puzzle dinosaur”.

Plant Eaters

Even though it physically looks like a hunter, analysis of its teeth and jaws proves that the Chilesaurus Diegosuarezi dinosaur was a plant eater. Its teeth are flat with fine serrations. It seems best suited for chewing leaves or fibrous plants, not for tearing flesh.

The jaw structure also shows efficient chewing movement patterns. Similar to other herbivorous dinosaurs. This strengthens the conclusion that Chilesaurus is a selected herbivore. Although it carries the anatomical legacy of the meat-eating type.

This eating pattern also provides evidence that evolution does not always follow a general path. In the case of Chilesaurus, adaptation to the environment appears to have been more influential than the origin of the dinosaur group.

At that time, the Earth was still full of various types of dinosaurs with very diverse shapes and behavior. The relatively warm climate and abundant vegetation created ideal conditions for herbivorous dinosaurs to thrive.

With its body size and anatomical structure, scientists estimate Chilesaurus had a unique survival strategy. These predators may rely on speed and agility to evade predators. Not on strength or large body size.
