Cargo Ship Capsizes in South China Sea, Leaving Casualties and Missing Crew
January 24, 2024 – A Singapore-flagged cargo ship, the Devon bay, capsized in the South China Sea, resulting in confirmed fatalities and a continuing search for missing crew members. Chinese authorities reported on Friday that two individuals have died and four remain unaccounted for following the incident, which involved a vessel carrying 21 Filipino nationals.
Rescue operations, coordinated by the Chinese Coast Guard and the People’s Liberation Army’s Southern Theater Command, have successfully recovered 15 individuals. According to the PLA’s Southern theatre Command,14 of those rescued are currently in stable condition.
the capsizing occurred approximately 100 kilometers northwest of Scarborough Shoal, a highly contested territory in the South china Sea. Communication wiht the Devon Bay was lost Thursday night as the ship was en route to Guangdong province in southern China. The Philippines Coast Guard has deployed two vessels and aircraft to support the ongoing rescue efforts.
Scarborough Shoal is a focal point of maritime disputes, with claims from china, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan. The area has witnessed increased tensions, including frequent confrontations between Chinese and Philippine vessels. in August, a collision occurred between a Chinese navy ship and a chinese Coast Guard ship during an attempt to impede a Philippine Coast Guard vessel near the shoal.
