China’s 2035 Moon Base Plans Include Robot Dogs for Patrol and Construction

China plans to deploy autonomous robot dogs to patrol, build, and explore its upcoming lunar research station by 2035, according to a research blueprint published in the Chinese Space Science and Technology journal. The proposal outlines a collaborative framework where four-legged machines assist astronauts with hazardous terrain navigation, equipment inspections, and sample collection on the Moon’s surface.

Lunar Mission Model: How Astronauts and Robot Dogs Work Together

Researchers from the China Academy of Space Technology developed a mission model detailing human-robot cooperation on the lunar surface. According to the research details reported by News24, a standard exploration team would consist of three astronauts paired with robotic systems. One astronaut leads two robot dogs across rugged terrain while another manages rock sampling and scientific experiments. A third astronaut coordinates the mission from inside a van-sized pressurized rover, retaining the ability to take remote control of the robotic units when necessary. These four-legged systems are designed to shoulder repetitive or dangerous tasks, allowing human crew members to concentrate on strategic and complex scientific decisions.

Operational Roles: Patrols, Maintenance, and Crew Companionship

Beyond navigation support, the proposed robotic systems could execute routine patrols and infrastructure inspections around the lunar base to identify environmental hazards. Scientists suggest the machines could monitor base conditions, clean living quarters, care for plants, and facilitate day-to-day operations. Furthermore, researchers noted that the robots could provide basic communication and companionship for astronauts during extended missions, potentially mitigating isolation stress in harsh environments. Over the long term, autonomous systems could assist with heavy-duty operations such as extracting water from lunar ice, mining minerals, converting lava tubes into protective shelters, and utilizing local materials for construction.

The International Lunar Research Station Timeline and Partnerships

The robot dog concept supports China’s broader development of the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS), a project pursued alongside Russia and international partners near the Moon’s south pole. China targets an initial crewed lunar landing before 2030, followed by a basic functional research station capable of supporting scientific experiments and early resource utilization by around 2035, with a larger complex planned for 2045. Preparation for these milestones includes missions like Chang’e-7, which aims to survey the lunar south pole and locate water ice for future base operations.
