China’s FAST Telescope Discovers Over 1,300 Pulsars in 10 Years

China’s Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope has identified more than 1,300 pulsars over the past decade, according to an academic conference in Guiyang. Located in Guizhou Province, the facility outpaced all other international telescopes combined in pulsar discoveries over the same ten-year period, securing a leading position for the country in global radio astronomy.

Decade of Discovery and Engineering Milestones

Set to mark its official 10th anniversary, the telescope known as FAST has driven a historic leap in observational capability since operations began. According to Jiang Peng, FAST chief engineer and deputy director of the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the facility has steadily fulfilled its core goal of yielding early, abundant, and high-quality scientific outcomes.

Engineering innovations have underpinned this decade of productivity. Upgraded measurement and control systems, domestically manufactured steel cables, and high-performance receivers ensure the structure runs with stability and efficiency. These technological enhancements directly support continuous observation schedules that expand humanity’s understanding of extreme cosmic phenomena.

Impact on Global Astrophysics Research

Beyond pulsars, FAST observations have delivered internationally influential findings across multiple key astrophysics domains. Researchers utilizing data from the Guizhou facility have published groundbreaking work on neutral hydrogen galaxies, fast radio bursts, and gravitational waves.

According to findings presented at the Guiyang conference, observational results from FAST have driven the publication of 13 papers in top-tier journals Science and Nature. The telescope’s primary contributions have earned widespread recognition:

  • Twice listed among Science‘s Top 10 scientific breakthroughs.
  • Once featured in Nature‘s Top 10 scientific discoveries.
  • Ten times recognized among China’s Top 10 scientific and technological advances.

Future Objectives for FAST

As the facility enters its second decade of operation, project leadership aims to transition from routine high-volume discoveries to landmark major achievements.
