China’s Smart Dragon 3 Rocket Successfully Launches 2 Satellites from Sea

China successfully launched two satellites into space using a Smart Dragon-3 (SD-3) carrier rocket from the waters off the coast of Yangjiang in Guangdong province, according to state media reports from Xinhua. The mission, which took place on September 24, 2024, utilized an offshore sea platform to place the satellites into their designated orbits.

Mission Details and Payload

The Smart Dragon-3 rocket carried the Tianjin-1 08 satellite and the DRO-L satellite, according to launch data published by China’s state news service. The launch marked another operational flight for the solid-propellant carrier rocket, which is designed to provide commercial launch services for domestic and international clients.

Engineers developed the SD-3 vehicle specifically to offer flexible, cost-effective launch options by utilizing both land-based and sea-based platforms. Sea-based launches reduce the risk of falling rocket debris hitting populated land areas and shorten preparation cycles for commercial operators, according to mission planners at the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.

Commercial Space Expansion in China

The successful deployment of the Tianjin-1 08 and DRO-L spacecraft highlights China’s expanding commercial space sector. According to Xinhua, sea-launch capabilities have become a core component of the country’s strategy to meet growing demand for satellite constellation deployments.

Commercial rocket operators in China have increasingly shifted toward flexible sea-launch platforms to support Earth observation, communication, and scientific research missions. The Smart Dragon series is managed by China Rocket Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the state-owned aerospace conglomerate, aiming to capture a larger share of the global small-satellite launch market.
