Cristian Medina Completes Move to Botafogo
Midfielder Cristian Medina has officially completed his transfer from Estudiantes to Brazilian Série A club Botafogo. The move comes after a period of negotiation, with Botafogo finally lifting an inhibition related to a debt with Atlanta United concerning the transfer of Thiago Almada.
Departure from Estudiantes
After some back-and-forth, Cristian Medina’s time at Estudiantes has reach to an end. Botafogo and Estudiantes reached an agreement for the midfielder to move to Brazilian football in the coming days. Medina was present at the Estudiantes’ 1-0 victory over Sarmiento in the Argentine Apertura, receiving a farewell ovation from the fans and teammates.
Botafogo’s Pursuit
Botafogo initially attempted to secure Medina’s services earlier in the year, but a debt to Atlanta United for the transfer of Thiago Almada prevented the deal from progressing. With that issue resolved, Botafogo renewed their efforts and successfully signed the player, sending a pre-contract offer to Medina.
Financial Details
While the exact compensation amount remains undisclosed, Estudiantes will receive funds for the interruption of Medina’s contract. The transfer was also influenced by the investment group led by Foster Gillett, who previously contributed $15 million towards Medina’s release clause from Boca Juniors in mid-2025.
Emotional Farewell
Medina received a heartfelt send-off from the Estudiantes faithful, being applauded by the fans after the match against Sarmiento. Estudiantes also expressed their gratitude on social media, recognizing Medina as one of their best players. The club described him as a “two-time champion” and praised his dribbling skills and impact on the team.
“⚽️🇦🇹 Paddock and dribble. Head up and the ball hidden under the sole of the boot. Bullfighter and two-time champion with our shirt. Thank you for so much football, Cristian! 🔝🎩”, posted Estudiantes on social media.
Eduardo Domínguez, Estudiantes’ former coach, also bid farewell as he is set to capture the helm at Atlético-MG.
