Phillies Secure Cristopher Sánchez’s Future with New Six-Year Extension

Philadelphia Phillies ace Cristopher Sánchez has agreed to a six-year contract extension, securing his place with the team through the 2032 season, with a club option for 2033. The deal guarantees Sánchez $107 million, building upon a previous extension and recognizing his emergence as one of baseball’s top pitchers.

Details of the Extension

The Phillies announced the extension on Sunday, March 22, 2026. The contract keeps Sánchez’s $3 million salary in place for the 2026 season, followed by $6 million in 2027 and $9 million in 2028, as previously agreed upon in a prior extension signed in June 2024 . Philadelphia will then pay Sánchez $30 million annually in both 2031 and 2032. The Phillies also hold a $44.5 million club option for the 2033 season, which includes a $1 million buyout .

Sánchez is also eligible to earn up to $13 million in incentive bonuses throughout the duration of the contract .

Sánchez’s Rise to Prominence

Sánchez finished second in the 2025 National League Cy Young Award voting, trailing only Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates . In 32 starts last season, he posted a 13-5 record with a 2.50 ERA and a career-high 212 strikeouts . His performance earned him an MLB-best 8.0 wins above replacement (WAR), according to Baseball Reference .

Over the past three seasons, Sánchez’s combined 13.5 WAR is tied with Skenes for third-best in baseball, behind Zack Wheeler (15.3) and Tarik Skubal (14.8) .

Phillies’ Commitment to Pitching Staff

This extension follows similar long-term commitments made by the Phillies to other key members of their pitching rotation. Jesús Luzardo recently signed a five-year, $135 million contract extension, while Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola are also under long-term deals . Rookie Andrew Painter has secured the fifth starter position in the rotation .

Looking Ahead

Sánchez is slated to be the Phillies’ Opening Day starter on Thursday, March 27, 2026, at Citizens Bank Park . The Phillies aim to continue their recent success, having reached the postseason in consecutive years (2024 and 2025) , and this extension solidifies a key piece of their future plans.
