Cistercian Monks Relocate to Mellifont Abbey in County Louth

The Cistercian Order in Ireland has announced its relocation to Mellifont Abbey in County Louth, marking a significant shift for the monastic community. The move follows a period of consolidation and reflection on the order’s long-term future, prompted by declining numbers and an aging community. The decision, formalized last week after a vote by the monastic chapter, brings together monks from three former abbeys: Mount Melleray in County Waterford, Mount Saint Joseph in Roscrea, and Mellifont itself.

A History of Consolidation

In January 2025, the communities from Mount Melleray, Mount Saint Joseph in Roscrea, and Mellifont initially gathered at the abbey in Roscrea for an interim period. This consolidation was intended to provide time and space to determine a permanent location. The Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance (O.C.S.O.), also known as Trappists, formally united the three communities on November 3, 2024, establishing a new community called Our Lady of Silence .

Gratitude and Transition

Dom Rufus Pound, the Superior of Our Lady of Silence Abbey, expressed gratitude to the communities’ supporters, stating, “We wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to the wider community for its steadfast support, friendship, and generosity over many generations.” He acknowledged that the relocation would be met with “great disappointment locally.”

Dom Rufus also extended appreciation to the staff at Mount Saint Joseph in Roscrea, emphasizing the order’s commitment to supporting them through the transition. Discussions are underway to ensure fair treatment and provisions for all staff members. The Order will maintain its patronage and commitment to Cistercian College, despite no longer residing on the grounds.

Future of Mount Melleray

Bishop of Waterford and Lismore, Phonsie Cullinan, expressed “deep sadness” at the Order’s departure from Mount Melleray. Discussions are reportedly at an advanced stage for a US-based Catholic university to establish a campus at the former Mount Melleray abbey in County Waterford. Bishop Cullinan emphasized the enduring spiritual significance of Mount Melleray, noting that its legacy extends beyond its physical structures to encompass centuries of prayer, and faith.

Transition Timeline

The transition to Mellifont Abbey is expected to take at least 18 months, allowing for a respectful and appropriate farewell from the communities’ current locations.
