Flavanols May Protect Blood Vessels During Prolonged Sitting

Table of Contents

New findings from the university of Birmingham suggest that regularly eating foods rich in flavanols, including tea, berries, apples, and cocoa, may help protect men’s blood vessels from the negative effects that occur during long periods of sitting.

The Problem with Prolonged Sitting

Sedentary habits are widespread in modern life. Young adults spend an estimated six hours a day seated, and extended sitting is known to reduce how well blood vessels function.

Earlier research has shown that even a small 1% drop in vascular function, measured through brachial Flow-mediated dilatation (FMD), corresponds to a 13% rise in the risk of cardiovascular conditions such as heart disease, strokes, and heart attacks.

Researchers at the University of Birmingham investigated whether dietary choices, specifically foods high in flavanols, could counteract the decline in vascular health caused by prolonged sitting.

What Are Flavanols?

Flavanols are naturally occurring polyphenols found in various fruits, tea, nuts, and cocoa beans. They’ve been previously linked to cardiovascular benefits, including supporting the vascular system during psychological stress.

This new study, published in the Journal of Physiology, builds on this existing evidence.

How the Study Works

Dr. Catarina Rendeiro, Assistant Professor in Nutritional Sciences at the University of Birmingham and lead author, explained: “Whether we are sitting at desks, behind the wheel of a car, or relaxing at home, prolonged sitting can negatively impact our blood vessel function. We wanted to see if consuming flavanol-rich foods could help mitigate these effects.”

The study involved men consuming flavanol-rich cocoa drinks.Researchers than monitored thier blood vessel function while they sat for extended periods.

Key Findings

  • Consuming flavanols appeared to help maintain blood vessel function during prolonged sitting.
  • Flavanols may help counteract the negative impact of sedentary behavior on cardiovascular health.
  • This research suggests a dietary strategy to support vascular health in a modern, sedentary lifestyle.

Why This Matters

Given the prevalence of sedentary jobs and lifestyles, finding ways to protect vascular health is crucial. Flavanols offer a possibly simple and accessible dietary intervention.

Sources of Flavanols

You can increase your flavanol intake by incorporating these foods into your diet:

  • Tea: Especially green tea and black tea.
  • Berries: Blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries are excellent sources.
  • Apples: Particularly those with darker skin.
  • Cocoa: Dark chocolate (with a high cocoa content) is a good option, but consume in moderation.
  • Nuts: Certain nuts, like pecans and walnuts, contain flavanols.

Looking Ahead

Further research is needed to determine the optimal dosage of flavanols and to investigate the long-term effects of flavanol consumption on cardiovascular health. However, these findings offer a promising step towards dietary strategies for mitigating the risks associated with sedentary lifestyles.
