Cody Rhodes has publicly expressed profound gratitude to Rey Mysterio, acknowledging the significant impact Mysterio had on launching his singles career in WWE. The emotional exchange occurred during a conversation on the “What Do You Want To Talk About?” podcast, where Rhodes stated that Mysterio “changed my life.”

The WrestleMania 27 Match

In 2011, at WrestleMania 27, Rhodes competed in his first singles match on a pay-per-view, facing Rey Mysterio in the second match of the main card. Reflecting on this event, Rhodes credits Mysterio with helping him regain momentum in his career. He explained that he felt lost after losing opportunities and that Mysterio provided a crucial platform for growth.

“I don’t get anywhere, dude. I had nothing coming my way. I lost Teddy and Randy. I wasn’t the one who was supposed to go… I got to experience things at a different level, and play ball at a higher level, and I would’ve never gotten out of the blocks… I would’ve never had anything,” Rhodes shared.

Mysterio’s Legacy and Influence

Rhodes also lauded Mysterio’s broader contributions to professional wrestling, recognizing his influence on Lucha Libre and his lasting legacy within WWE. Growing up with a father involved in the wrestling business, Rhodes revealed he was a fan of Mysterio, making their in-ring connection particularly meaningful.

Mysterio’s Gratitude and Konnan’s Influence

Mysterio responded with gratitude, expressing how much it meant to him to have played a role in Rhodes’s career advancement. He, in turn, credited Konnan, a former WCW star and AAA official, for providing similar support earlier in his own career.

“I feel truly blessed and honored to have been that person for you. You have no idea,” Mysterio said. “I feel truly honored… from the bottom of my heart.”
