Lowry and Smotherman Share Lead at Cognizant Classic
The Palm Beaches, FL – Shane Lowry and Austin Smotherman are tied for the lead after Saturday’s third round of The Cognizant Classic, with both players carding a score of 13-under par. Tee times were moved up due to potential inclement weather in the West Palm Beach area.
Lowry’s Strong Performance
Lowry shot an 8-under 63, his lowest career round at PGA National, a course where he has consistently performed well. He has finished in the top five at this event three of the last four years. Lowry opened with a 5-under 30 through his first nine holes and added birdies on holes 10, 17, and 18. This marks Lowry’s first 54-hole lead since the 2025 Truist Championship, where he finished tied for second. His last victory on the PGA TOUR came alongside Rory McIlroy at the 2024 Zurich Classic of Recent Orleans.
Smotherman in Contention
Smotherman is seeking his maiden TOUR title after winning twice on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2025 to regain PGA TOUR status. He had a more challenging day on Saturday, with five birdies and three bogeys, including consecutive bogeys on holes 6 and 7. Smotherman’s ball-striking has been impressive, ranking fifth in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee and third in Strokes Gained: Approach to Green.
The Chase Continues
Nico Echavarria and Taylor Moore are one shot behind the leaders at 12-under par, while Jimmy Stanger is at 11-under, rounding out the top five. Lowry, a major champion, is the highest-ranked player in the field.
Looking Ahead to Sunday
Lowry and Smotherman will play together in the final group on Sunday. Lowry expressed the need to continue executing well to secure a victory. Smotherman, with a third child on the way, is focused on capitalizing on the opportunity.
