Understanding Bone Adiposity and Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis occurs when bone density decreases, making bones fragile and prone to fractures. A key factor in the development of osteoporosis is an imbalance between osteoblasts (bone-forming cells) and adipocytes (fat cells) within the bone marrow. As individuals age, or due to certain medical conditions, bone marrow can accumulate excessive fat, reducing bone density and compromising skeletal integrity.

How Colchicine Works

Researchers at IDIS, led by Rodolfo Gómez, investigated the impact of colchicine on mesenchymal stem cells, which have the potential to develop into either osteoblasts or adipocytes. The study found that colchicine alters the metabolism of these cells, encouraging them to become bone-forming cells rather than fat cells. Specifically, colchicine appears to inhibit the adipogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells.

One of the most significant aspects of this discovery is the accessibility of colchicine.
