Colombia Approves Benznidazole for Chagas Disease Treatment
Colombia has approved Benznidazole 100 mg tablets for the timely treatment of Chagas disease, aiming to prevent serious complications, particularly in vulnerable populations and high-risk areas. This decision represents a significant step forward in public health, facilitating early intervention for affected individuals and reducing the progression of the disease and its associated chronic complications, primarily affecting the heart and digestive system.
“Timely access to this medication allows us to act promptly, prevent serious complications, and protect the lives of thousands of people, especially in the most vulnerable regions of the country. This is an important step toward closing health gaps and advancing the control of Chagas disease in Colombia,” stated the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Guillermo Alfonso Jaramillo.
Benznidazole is a primary treatment for Chagas disease, caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. Its increased availability strengthens the Colombian health system’s capacity to respond effectively to this significant public health concern, which continues to affect communities across various regions of the country.
Collaboration and Domestic Production
This achievement is the result of collaboration between the Ministry of Health and Social Protection and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, with funding from the Health Research Fund (FIS), managed by the University of Antioquia. Understanding Chagas Disease
Chagas disease is a parasitic infection prevalent in Latin America. It is transmitted to humans primarily through contact with triatomine bugs, known as “kissing bugs,” which carry the Trypanosoma cruzi parasite. The disease has two phases: an acute phase and a chronic phase.
Acute Phase
The acute phase occurs shortly after infection and often presents with mild or no symptoms. Still, some individuals may experience fever, fatigue, body aches, and swelling around the site of infection.
Chronic Phase
If left untreated, Chagas disease can progress to the chronic phase, which can develop years or even decades after the initial infection. In the chronic phase, the parasite can damage the heart muscle, leading to heart failure, arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac death. It can also affect the digestive system, causing enlargement of the esophagus and colon, leading to difficulties in swallowing and bowel movements.
Treatment Options: Benznidazole vs. Nifurtimox
Benznidazole and nifurtimox are the two main drugs used to treat Chagas disease. Recent research has compared the effectiveness and side effects of these two medications, particularly in indigenous communities in Colombia.
A study published in J Clinical Medicine (April 26, 2024) found that while both drugs are effective, Benznidazole was associated with fewer and milder side effects compared to Nifurtimox. Specifically, 65% of individuals treated with Benznidazole experienced at least one adverse event, while 84% of those treated with Nifurtimox did.
