what are Colombian raffles?
Las Colombian raffles are a fraud mechanism and extortion disguised as raffles between tenants. Organizers offer attractive prizes such as cash, appliances, or even cars. However, there are rarely real winners, and moast of the money raised from ticket sales remains with those controlling the scheme.
According to news reports and local complaints, manny merchants are forced to participate under duress. Ticket purchases are not voluntary and are often accompanied by veiled threats or explicit ones, making these raffles a form of systematic collection.
Lots of money, few rewards
This scheme allows the accumulation of large sums of money quickly. In the few cases where a prize is awarded, it usually represents a small fraction of the amount collected, maintaining the appearance of legality and attracting more participants in future raffles.
State authorities have identified that this practice quickly adapts to evade operations, making total eradication difficult despite ongoing efforts in recent years.
