Mars Bleu 2026: Raising Awareness for Colorectal Cancer Prevention
March is Mars Bleu (Blue March), a month dedicated to raising awareness about colorectal cancer, the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in France.1 This year, the campaign emphasizes the importance of screening and early detection, highlighting that early diagnosis improves the chances of successful treatment.
Understanding Colorectal Cancer
Colorectal cancer often develops from benign tumors known as adenomatous polyps.1 Detecting and removing these polyps can significantly reduce the risk of cancer development and in some cases, eliminate it altogether. When diagnosed at an early stage, colorectal cancer is curable in 90% of cases, with a 5-year survival rate of approximately 63%.3
The Importance of Screening
Despite the effectiveness of early detection, participation rates in colorectal cancer screening remain insufficient. In Martinique, for example, only 19.5% of eligible individuals participated in screening in 2024, a decrease from 22.4% in 2023 and 28.9% in 2022.3 Nationally, over 47,000 people are diagnosed with colorectal cancer annually, resulting in more than 17,000 deaths.3
Simple Steps for Prevention
Lifestyle factors as well play a role in colorectal cancer risk. Engaging in 30 minutes of physical activity daily can reduce the risk by up to 20%.1 awareness is growing regarding the link between red meat consumption and increased risk.2
Mars Bleu 2026 Initiatives
This year’s Mars Bleu campaign features endorsements from several public figures, including Anthony Authie, Franck Dubosc, Kyan Khojandi, Enzo Lefort, Marine Leonardi, Paola Locatelli, Mademoiselle Agnès, and Suzane, who are encouraging individuals to get screened.1 Awareness events are scheduled at Manchester Hospital on March 26, 2026, from 9 a.m. To 4 p.m., and at Fumay Hospital on March 31, 2026, from 1:30 p.m. To 4:30 p.m.1
How to Get Involved
Supporting Mars Bleu can be as simple as spreading awareness among friends and family. A solidarity shop offers t-shirts, tote bags, and mugs, with proceeds supporting the Ligue contre le cancer’s fight against colorectal cancer.1
