Columbus Recreation and Parks Department Pauses Fee Increases After Community Concerns

The Columbus Department of Recreation and Parks announced planned fee increases for 2026, citing rising operational costs. However, following vocal opposition from community members, especially seniors who regularly attend programs at the Gillie Community Center, the department has agreed to pause and reevaluate certain proposed changes.

During a December 8th Recreation and Parks Commission meeting, approximately two dozen residents expressed concerns regarding the planned increases. As a direct result of this feedback, the department has decided to temporarily suspend plans to introduce fees for currently free, staff-led adult community center classes.

The Columbus Department of Recreation and Parks remains committed to providing accessible recreational opportunities for all residents, and is currently working to balance budgetary needs with community affordability. Further updates regarding the fee structure will be announced following the department’s internal review.
