Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS Shows Activity in New Images from Juice and Hubble

European astronomers have released a new image of comet 3I/ATLAS, captured by the Jupiter-tracking probe Juice. The instrument also gathered data on the interstellar visitor’s behavior and composition.
“A very clearly visible comet surrounded by signs of activity surprised us.Concrete information will not arrive on Earth until February of next year. Though, we can already determine some elements from the image,” communicated representatives of the European Space Agency (ESA).
The scientists described the glowing coma – a gas envelope surrounding the comet’s nucleus – and noted the visibility of a plasma tail, composed of electrically charged gas.

Juice acquired the data in early November while approaching the interstellar body at a distance of approximately 66 million kilometers. The initial information has only recently arrived due to the probe utilizing a secondary antenna. A complete analysis will take time, as “The satellite now uses the main antenna as a heat shield to protect it from the Sun,” ESA experts explained.
A bright blue comet
New images have also been published by American astronomers from the national Aeronautics and Space administration (NASA). They used the Hubble Space Telescope for observations on November 30, having previously captured images in July following the revelation of 3I/ATLAS.
