Cometz de Metz Secure Division 1 Promotion for 2027 After Championship Win

The Cometz de Metz will return to France’s elite Division 1 baseball league for the 2027 season, according to blelorraine.fr. The club secured the promotion by capturing the 2026 Division 2 French championship, sweeping the Cougars de Montigny-le-Bretonneux three games to zero in the final series. The decisive third game ended in a 5-0 shutout victory played at home on September 19, 2026, crowning a season where Metz finished first in the regular standings.

Rebuilding After the 2025 Relegation

This championship win marks an immediate rebound for the club following its relegation from Division 1 at the conclusion of the 2025 season. That drop ended a seven-year run in the top flight for Metz, which originally broke into Division 1 for the first time in 2019. Rather than dwelling on the setback, the squad reset its focus in Division 2 and dominated the 2026 campaign to reclaim its spot among the country’s best teams.

Decades of Growth From a High School Yard to National Prominence

Baseball in Metz traces its origins back to 1984 at the Lycée Robert Schuman, where three students—Bertrand Maire, François Schaefer, and David Mumford—started playing together. The program formalized its structure the following year under the Stade Messin Etudiant Club before officially adopting the Cometz moniker in 1988. By scaling past one hundred members, the organization became the first club from the Lorraine region to reach a national level of competition. After hitting competitive hurdles, leadership revamped the sporting project in the early 2010s. The senior team climbed sequentially through regional and national tiers: Regional 2 in 2010, Regional 1 in 2012, National 2 in 2014, National 1 in 2015, and Division 2 in 2017, ultimately opening the door to their initial Division 1 appearance two years later.

Cometz Field at the Complexe Sportif des Hauts de Blémont

Daily operations and home fixtures take place at Cometz Field, located within the Complexe sportif des Hauts de Blémont on Rue du Général Metman in Metz. Fitted for competitive play in 1996, the facility serves as the permanent home ground for the club’s senior and youth programs.

Youth Development and Club Infrastructure

Beyond the flagship senior squad, the Cometz operate a robust organizational pipeline. The club features a reserve team competing in Division 3, a softball division catering to both women and mixed squads, and four distinct youth baseball brackets covering U9/U10, U12, U15, and U18 age groups. Additionally, an introductory baseball school welcomes children starting at four years old.

What Lies Ahead for Metz Baseball in 2027

The club now turns its attention to establishing a lasting presence in Division 1 when play resumes in 2027, aiming to solidify its status as a permanent fixture at the highest level of French baseball.
