Comic Con Astana 2026 shattered attendance records during its milestone fifth anniversary run, drawing a cumulative total of more than 76,000 visitors across its four-day schedule from August 6 to August 9, according to reports from TuraNews. The pop-culture festival utilized two major venues in the capital of Kazakhstan—the Barys Arena and the Alau Ice Palace—to host international stars, creators, and thousands of cosplayers from over 40 countries.

Record Attendance and International Headliners

The festival opened on August 6 with a single-day turnout of 16,000 visitors, marking the highest opening-day attendance in the history of the event, according to data from the Astana akimat cited by Youth.kz. For the first time, Comic Con Astana featured four major international headliners: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Paul Anderson, Iñaki Godoy, and Taz Skylar.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, known for playing Jaime Lannister in Game of Thrones, praised the hospitality of Kazakhstan and told press attendees that the country could easily serve as a diplomatic buffer zone between the lands of the Lannisters and the Dothraki. Paul Anderson, who portrays Arthur Shelby in Peaky Blinders, stated that Comic Con Astana was the best convention he had ever attended, noting that the capital’s roads reminded him of Los Angeles. Cosplay Competition and Major Winners

The international cosplay competition featured a prize pool of 20 million tenge, with 64 finalists competing on the main stage out of roughly 400 registered participants from 20 countries. The festival’s Grand Prix and the title of Comic Con Astana 2026 Arena Champion, along with a 4.5 million tenge prize, was awarded to Russian cosplayer Olga Haku (Frau Haku) for her portrayal of Lae’zel wearing the Reaper’s Embrace armor from Baldur’s Gate 3. According to the competitor, the 35-kilogram costume took nearly two years to construct using velvet, steel, brass, cast plastic, and extensive hand-embroidery. Additional top prizes went to cosplayer Horn for an Eredin build from The Witcher 3, local Astana resident Gol.D.Moon for a Monster Hunter presentation, and an Astana-based group named “Muzhitsky dozhd” for their Warhammer 40,000 Adeptus Astartes costumes.

Local Creative Industry Showcases

Alongside international guests, the event provided a platform for domestic digital projects and regional talent. Organizers premiered a three-minute AI-animated episode of the art-film project Tengrida: Cyber Steppe, created by Almaty-based cosplayer Aruzhan Жунусова (Aruvibez). The project merges cyberpunk aesthetics with AI technology and Central Asian cultural motifs. Attendees also viewed an exclusive trailer for Toxic, the upcoming September superhero series created by Alisher Utev, the director behind the series 5:32.
