Competitive gymnastics costs and injuries push youth out of the sport

Competitive artistic gymnastics demands grueling physical commitments and steep financial investments that often push youth participants out of the sport early. According to data tracked by Gymnastics Online, the median price of participating in competitive gymnastics reaches eight thousand dollars per year as athletes advance through skill tiers.

The Steep Costs of Elite Youth Gymnastics

Balancing Exhausting Schedules and Severe Injuries

Artistic gymnastics requires athletes to execute short, choreographed routines featuring aerials and flips. While learning these skills provides personal achievement, the physical and financial hurdles drive many young participants to quit.

Berkeley High School junior Lila McMahon, who has competed for over a decade, spends more than 24 hours a week training at her gym. McMahon trains from four to eight on weekday evenings and nine to one on Saturdays, while also utilizing private lessons to master precise tumbling and apparatus skills.

The Toll of Overtraining on Young Bodies

That extensive training schedule creates high rates of physical setbacks.

“(For) pretty much everyone, (there are) injuries all of the time,” McMahon said.

BHS junior Minerva Burley, an eight-year competitive gymnastics veteran, noted that returning from injury requires rebuilding endurance in specific, rarely used muscles because cross-training options are limited. BHS senior Neshia Geoghegan, currently sidelined with a back injury, explained that extended time away from the gym makes the physical return increasingly difficult.

Camaraderie as a Driving Force

Despite the high financial costs, rigorous time commitments, and frequent injuries, athletes often maintain their dedication because of strong team camaraderie. McMahon and Geoghegan credit their close-knit team environment for keeping them motivated through the sport’s demanding cycles.

“We all push each other to be better, but are also supportive to each other at the same time,” Geoghegan said.

McMahon looks toward a future in collegiate gymnastics, balancing her grueling practice schedule with her high school commitments while relying on her teammates for mutual encouragement.
