New Orillia Program Offers Support for New Parents

A new community-based program, Connected Beginnings, is launching in Orillia, Ontario, to provide comprehensive support for parents navigating pregnancy and early parenthood. The program aims to address a growing necessitate for accessible postpartum care and create a supportive environment for families.

Addressing a Critical Need for Postpartum Support

Many parents experience a lack of support after leaving the hospital with a newborn, facing emotional and practical challenges with limited guidance. Connected Beginnings was developed through a collaboration of local maternal health professionals who recognized this gap in community resources. Approximately one in five parents experiences mental health challenges during pregnancy or postpartum according to program founder Amber Sperling, and local data suggests rates in the Orillia area are higher than provincial averages.

What Connected Beginnings Offers

The 12-week program provides practical guidance, emotional support, and trusted information for parents. It fosters a welcoming space where parents can connect with one another, ask questions, and build confidence while learning from local professionals. Babies are welcome to attend sessions, creating a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.

Key Program Components

  • Postpartum Emotional Health and Anxiety: Addressing the emotional challenges of early parenthood.
  • Feeding and Infant Care: Providing guidance on breastfeeding, formula feeding, and general infant care.
  • Physical Recovery After Birth: Supporting parents in their physical recovery journey.
  • Navigating Relationship and Identity Changes: Helping parents adjust to the changes in their relationships and sense of self.
  • Building Confidence as a New Parent: Empowering parents to trust their instincts and navigate the challenges of parenthood.

Expert Collaboration

Connected Beginnings brings together a team of community collaborators, including:

  • Orillia Perinatal Massage (RMT and doula support)
  • She’s Simply the Breast (lactation services)
  • Kelly Armstrong (registered midwife and executive coach)

These practitioners offer expertise in maternal mental health, infant feeding, postpartum recovery, and early parenting support.

Funding and Accessibility

The program is supported by funding from the Orillia Area Community Development Corporation, ensuring accessibility for families and strengthening local collaboration around maternal and infant well-being.

A “Village” for New Parents

“Parents are often told that raising a child takes a village,” said Amber Sperling, MSW, RSW, founder of Amber Sperling Social Work & Psychotherapy Services and co-chair of the regional Perinatal Mental Health Task Force. “Connected Beginnings is about helping rebuild that village by bringing together families and local professionals who care deeply about supporting parents during this important transition.”

The program is designed to complement, not replace, medical care provided by physicians, midwives, and other healthcare providers.
